7 Steps to a Cleaner Closet

If you're like me, you probably have your closet jam-packed with things that don't even belong in it (sports equipment, everyday storage, etc.). One thing we have to keep in mind when it comes to our wardrobe closet -- If it isn't clothing, accessories, or shoes, it doesn't belong! Here is a simplistic way to get your closet in order with a minimalistic appeal.
1. Pull Everything Out
Everything must go! Gut your closet out and place all of your items in a clean area (living room, bed, open floor).
2. Keep, Toss, Maybe
Even if you aren't a hoarder, some things can be hard to let go. We constantly give ourselves excuses of why that sweater from 8 seasons ago should remain in your closet. Keep it simple and ask these questions to yourself: Does it fit? Is this an old trend or a classic piece? Does it flatter my shape? Is it in good condition? Does it represent who I am today? Once you've decided, start making three piles: KEEP, TOSS, and MAYBE.
After you've gotten your piles together, revisit your maybe pile and weed it down again to TOSS & MAYBE. I try to get rid of as much as possible in my Maybe pile to minimize what's in my current closet.
3. Store Out-of-Season Items
Spring and Summer are riding our coattails, so it's time to store away those Fall/Winter heavy coats, sweaters, and snow boots.

4. Containers
A great usage of space and minimalistic appeal is to add clear, stackable containers with drawers. Use these to store your out-of-season items or even as a way to fashionably shelf your sexy panty-hose, stockings, socks, sandals, etc.
5. Matching Hangers

An easy way to a clean closet is to start collecting matching hangers. Choose a color and keep it unanimous. Black or Brown wooden hangers are my favorite, while white plastic hangers are always safe. Try to get hangers for your tops and bottoms. Also decide which of your items need to be folded to keep them from stretching or drooping (these will go in your FOLD category). Dividers are great for your folded sections.
6. Categorize by Style/Color
I think the cleanest way is to categorize your clothing by style and color from light to dark. Here's how I do mine: Tanks, Tee's, Long Sleeve OR Shorts, Skirts, Dresses. Each from the lightest color to the darkest color. This makes it much easier when it's time to get dressed, plus it looks nice.

7. Add a Mirror
Mirrors aren't only for checking yourself out, they're also a mirage for making your closet look bigger than what it is. You can try a hanging door mirror on the back of your closet door, or even inside of your closet against a wall for depth.
If you're in an apartment that has no closets, you can make use of your wall space and build you own hanging racks.

Now that you have all of the proper steps to a clean, organized, yet fashionable closet, you're on your way to a beautiful, well-kept closet.
NOTE: When deciding on what to do with the items you've chosmen to get rid of, instead of just throwing them in the trash, consider taking them to your local Salvation Army, Goodwill, donate to a charity or shelter. For your fashionable items you can sell them. I sell my gently-used clothing on Poshmark.
